I went fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska. Five of us, four tourists and a guide, went about 6 miles from the dock to catch halibut.

This one weighed in at about 20 lbs. I caught it in 150 feet of water on the bottom and took about 10 minutes to land it.

The guide cleaned the fish and it fed about 20 people at the fish camp they had set up on a small island.

The food was great! As Mark Twain wrote, "Hunger is the best sauce."

But I'll have to say, it was good to come home to a nice clean stateroom, a warm shower, and a firm matress (with my favorite woman on it!)

The water service to the tub was a real bear! I had to make an access through the wall coming in from my study. Once it was all done, it seemed pretty simple. But getting there was quite a bit of work.

The access panel in the study will be trimmed with oak that matches the bookshelves. Since the location is beside my study desk, it shouldn't be too conspicuous.

The angle iron at the top with the 1/2-inch hole will be drilled through with 2 each 7/8-inch holes to mount the faucet. If all goes well, we should have a faucet that can't be pulled out of the wall by over-exuberant grandchildren.

All the old electrical wiring, switches, lights, and plugs were removed and replaced with new (including a GFI outlet by the sink). The blue sheetrock is water and mold resistant and the lighter board on the walls and floor are cement board used as an underlayment for the tile.

These are old pictures that I never got on the blog. So, here is Trevon, Gpa and Taylor measuring to see who is taller. This all happened in Colorado on our family vacation in May 2008. Trevon is feeling the pain because he doesn't come close. Taylor is finally taller than Gpa, which means he is taller than Ryan. The only person he has to pass now is Claud. We'll see. He was still only 17 here.

Once the entry table was rebuilt, I decided to build some new end tables for the couch. Here is $80 worth of materials for 1 table

Here are the machined top, skirt, shelf and legs.

And the two new end tables in the living room. With the exception of the TV table on the far right, we've got a pretty nice suite of dining room, living room furniture made from oak. Looks nice with the oak floor.

Over the Christmas break, I decided to make an oak top and shelf for our entry table. The previous top and shelf were pine.

I was able to reuse the oak legs and skirt.

The finished product came out pretty nice.

And it looks fine tucked in it's original location behind our front door.

My most recent project on the house was to replace this 30-year old (estimate) access ladder to our attic.

I built the new ladder from redwood and gave it a good foundation.

I was able to get back to work on Avery's bed/playhouse this weekend. The big effort was to get it painted and a ladder made so we could take it to Colorado when Suzi and I go up there this coming Friday. I'll be in Houston doing my other job through Wednesday, so this week-end was it.

The ladder looks sturdy enough. And tall. I had to climb high in order to reach the top.

I hope Avery likes white, because that's what this paint color is... bright, shiny white.

The ladder can be moved to any location since it hooks over the top rail. It is heavy enough so it doesn't have to be attached... I hope. If necessary, it can be screwed to the top rail.

I made some boxes this week as a way to learn and practice making hand-cut dovetail joints. The first one was the unfinished redwood box on the right. It was followed by the finished redwood and poplar box at the top. Finally, once I began to get the hang of it, I used some special hard maple scrap left over from making my workbench and got the highly figured result on the left.

The idea with the redwood/poplar was to produce a high contrast at the corners.

I am stunned with the beauty of this wood! It was just a left-over scrap lying in the corner of my shop for a year. A few cuts with a dovetail saw and some shaping on a router table and out pops a beautiful little box. I just can't get over the beauty of this wood. And just think, God made this wonderful beauty and hid it inside a tree to be coaxed out by inquisitive craftsmen. Most of this kind of beauty is unseen by human eyes but, you can bet, is genuinely appreciated by God Himself.

While I was at it, I thought I'd add the latest woodshop project to the blog. This is a miniature hutch for the playroom above the shop appartment. I found the plans in a magazine and thought it would fit perfectly in the down-scaled hide away.

Charlie and Grandpa worked over the Christmas holiday to rebuild the deck over the old greenhouse that Suzi's grandpa built in 1944.

And here's the new one - a significant upgrade that will hopefully give years of fun for everyone. My plan is to rebuild the treehouse using redwood lumber like the new deck. I'm thinking that the tree swing can also be rebuilt at the appropriate time.

There's a ladder under a trap door - leading down to the "dungeon." Should make for lots of hours of great play.

While we were in Ft. Collins this last week, mom and I helped Sandy and Trevon install a play area for Avery. Sandy had designed it and had the materials ready when we got there on Thursdy, so between then and Monday morning, we notched the landscape timbers, dug footings for them, installed them with 3/8-inch diameter spikes, laid down landscape paper, and wheel-barrowed tons (literally) of pea gravel, sand, 2 large rocks, and monster-big log sections into the play area. A tarp protects the sand box from rain and critters. Hopefully Avery and her friends will have many hours of fun frolicking in this great play area. Next comes a playhouse on stilts above the sandbox... but that's for another trip.

A beautiful sunrise over the Organ Mountains! Mom caught this the other morning while going to the weather station.
Another beautiful sight! I just recently received, assembled, and installed my new cabinet saw. It is a dream to operate and makes awesome cuts in even the hardest woods.
Anyone need a step stool? I have one here, as you can see, in the shop with my new cabinet saw. Did I tell you about my new cabinet saw? :-)

Here's the 305 Bell house in 1942 when Suzi's grandparents on her mom's side lived there.

We got the house in 1978 and added on the back bedrooms, an aproximately 650 sq.ft. addition. We also modified the front by closing a front door and window in the front bedroom then removing the wall between the two rooms to make the current living/dining room. This photo is from 1979 when I was using Gpa Beyer's Ford tractor to rework the front yard.

Today, if you look carefully between the garage and the house, you can see the roof of the shop apartment where Sami and Ryan lived for a few months when they returned from Colorado. How do you like mom's car compared to her grandpa's car?

How does one get rough-sawn maple lumber that looks like this...

By using a planer.
Last week I got a 12-inch planer - with mom's blessing and contribution from the general budget. You can see the stunning beauty of the wood revealed before your eyes as the planer does its work. The plan is to use the lumber to make a new top for the pine workbench which will include a twin-screw, end vise. This will provide a durable work surface on which I can hold parts I am preparing for future projects. I'll also use the workbench as an outfeed table for the table saw.

Here is the completed bench. I'm undecided regarding whether or not I should put a finish on this. What do you think?

I've decided to put the bench by the table saw (and use it as an outfeed table and a more accessable assembly table) rather than putting it in the corner under the TV. That makes me think I should add some workpiece clamping devices, like a twin screw end vise or a pattern maker's vise. Each of those is pretty pricey, but invaluable. I'll need to add bench dogs (holes drilled in the top with removable inserts that work with the end vise) to clamp large pieces for sanding and planing.
The shop is available for you to use if you want to build something. This is an open invitation to family and friends. If you need to stay overnight to get your job done, there is a nice apartment next door.

This is my first project in the new shop. A work bench that is the right height for me and which is a bit more sturdy and better looking than a bunch of old kitchen cabinets cobbled together.

We've had progress on a couple fronts. First, there is the door to the attic and second, the initial taping and bedding.
The door to the attic will give us access to take larger things in and out which would not fit through the 18" door at the top of the stairs. The big door will have two deadbolt latches on the outside so the kids cannot open it from the inside. I figured this would be a good defense against the curiosity of the grandkids as they grow older. Wouldn't want them opening the door and tumbling out.

Regarding the drywall, the crew should be back on Monday to continue the good work they have begun. I'm pretty excited about having everything textured, painted and trimmed before I start to move into the shop. I'm thinking I'll paint the floor of the shop and perhaps put Pergo-type flooring in the attic playroom.

This past week Suzi and I decided to hire professionals to tape, bed, and texture the shop and playroom. So here are a couple of pictures of the unfinished drywall for posterity. Hopefully, tomorrow morning, the crew will be here to begin the work. Here you can see the new stairway I'm building to access the playroom. A secure bannister will be added to ensure it's safe use by the little ones.

Charlie visited Grandpa in the shop while I was prepping for the sheetrockers. This little garden tool was his outdoor favorite during his week-long visit in Las Cruces (while Lani and Jarod enjoyed an anniversary trip to the Big D).

Well, look at this! We passed the final inspection and have occupancy of the guest room. This means that it is now officially available for you and your kid(s) when you visit home. Ryan and Sami will be the first to use the room since they are coming this weekend for a week long Christmas visit.
You will need to let us know before you come what you want us to stock in the fridge. And there is a freezer compartment that can hold plenty of your favorite ice cream.
The king-size, pillow-top bed is plenty large for whatever you want to use it for. You know, like, if you want your kid to sleep on the bed with you because they are having a hard time sleeping, or whatever... Or if you want to lie on the bed and play video games, or whatever... And there are the reading lights for reading while the other sleeps, or for mood lighting, or whatever... moving on...
Someone mentioned that the bathroom is plenty big and will hold a "pack-and-play" crib, or whatever...

Okay, here we go again! With my hand well on the way to healing, I've been able to go to work again in the shop. With the installation of the water heater and the top-out plumbing, we are ready to call for the final plumbing inspection. Here's hoping that goes well.

As you can see, the trim has been caulked. What remains is a bit of interior painting, installation of the tile backsplash, final cleaning and sealing of the grout, installation of the shutters, and a little bit of trim work and painting on the outside. After the final electrical inspection I will be able to call for the final overall inspection to gain occupancy. Then it's ready for visitors. And that's exactly what we are after. When the kids and their families visit, they will have a choice of the garage apartment or the shop apartment. If you count the bedroom in the main house that enables us to put everyone up at the same time without overcrowding.

I'm thinking that this will be the last photo of my surgically repaird right middle finger. I have about 20% strength and maybe 50% range of motion and am working to increase those with the help of a physical therapist. I'm very grateful that the tendon has been reattached and that the joint works. This injury has kept me from working on the shop, but that work has begun again this Thanksgiving weekend.

Well, the hand is looking pretty good these days. When Erin and Marissa were visiting last Friday, I decided, with her professional approval, to remove the splint and type my sermon. What a relief that was. It made it possible to do the work in a much shorter time than if I had used the "one finger" method with my left hand. And it enabled me to do a better job since I compose at the keyboard (which is difficult to do if your are typing left-handed with the one-finger method). I go to the doctor next Wednesday for removal from the wire that penetrates my fingernail and finger tip bone to anchor the tendon. He said, "You are not going to like me when I remove that wire." He's probably right! In fact, I'm not liking him very much just thinking about it.

Hey, I know this is a bit greusome, but I'm taking the risk of showing these to you anyway. The top photo was taken the day after my tendon repair surgery on September 20th. The one below shows the healing progress as of October 8th. My splint will be removed on October 23rd after I return from Washington DC when I'll begin the process of strengthening my atrophied forearm. Things look good for a full recovery which bodes well for all the things I hope to do, like completing the shop and apartment. I'm grateful for the favorable outlook.

For those who have not heard, Joel slipped on the roof (he was going up to repair the skylight that was broken by a hailstorn) and to keep from falling, grabbed the airconditioner stand and cut his hand. He actually severd the tendon in the middle finger of his right hand.
Here is the splint that the therapist built for him. He had surgery to reattach the ligament.
Here he is after surgery. He will wear this for 3 1/2 weeks. It enables him to straighten his finger only so far, so he won't tear his stitches, then the yellow rubberbands pull it back down. He needs to exercise it so it will heal like it is supposed to.
Here he is eating lunch after we got home. This is called a cheese box. He rests his arm in it.

Sandy and Avery came to visit in early Sept. While they were here, the Gobble's gave Avery and Charlie their early birthday presents. Build-a-bears are made specifically for them.
Charlie may leave his glasses alone, but they are pretty facinating to Avery.
Jarod also flew in on the same weekend. Here we are at a volleyball game in El Paso.
Lani loves Avery. I think she needs a daughter.

Lani is now coaching at Deming. One of her first games was to come and play in her old HS gym against her HS coach. It was a very special time. We are so thankful to the Leupold's for their involvement in her life.
Keith had the announcer say some really nice things about her as they introduced her. One of the accolades was that she still holds the kill record at LCHS with 40 kills against Deming.
When the LCHS players greeted her, they each gave her a rose and said "Once a dawg, always a dawg". It was very emotional for Lani.

On the July 4th weekend we got together at 305 Bell and worked on the apartment. Well, some worked and some sat for a while...

Michael Slockers helped me Friday and Saturday to install the siding on the gables of the shop. Lots of work was completed and I was completely worn out.

The results were very satisfying. We hung the sheetrock in the porch and on Sunday afternoon I completed the first coat of taping and bedding.

The base coat of the stucco is on! When you guys come in
July we will pour concrete stoops in front of the doors. We'll
put Charlie's and Avery's footprints in them to match the one's
of Taylor and Jess by the back door.

All the taping and bedding (first coat only) is completed for
the bedroom and bathroom. Steady progress is being made.
My motto is, "Every task done today is one that doesn't
have to be done tomorrow." Looking forward to the help in July.

Hey, wanna see two really cool grandkids?
Well, we've got 'em. This is Jess at her 8th grade graduation
ceremony at MVCS. Notice the great smile and the shear
beauty. Most recently she made the alternate team for a
regional select under 14 volleyball team and tried out for the
LCHS Girls Acapella Choir. We don't know about the results
of the choir tryout, but how could they refuse her (you've heard
her sing)?
Then there's Taylor. He's so cool they don't need an air conditioner
in the gym. He and Claud are in Missouri this week
at a point guard camp. He was the starting point guard for the
Hatch Valley Bears as a Freshman and will really bring it on in
his Sophmore year. Next week they will spend a week in
Arizona at team camp. It won't be long and he will have his
driver's license.
I see him often enough driving the truck even now. Hmmm!

This will give you an idea of what the kid's attice will look like. You can imagine a stairway/ladder at about the angle of the 2x10 leaning against the scaffolding. Then, imaging a rail that will keep your precious ones from falling from the stairway and the landing.
The large opening will be closed up with a removable wall section. Having this larger access will enable us to get larger items into the attic.
Can you imagine this with some miniature furniture, a toy box...

On Saturday, Matt and Ben Carr came to my rescue. We worked on the back first...
...and after two burrito sessions and three or four water breaks, completed most of the front.
I took a little siesta after they left at about 3:00. Then came back out to work some more.
Sunday after church I completed most of the roof. There are just a few pieces that remain to be set and then I will wrap it up by completing the ridges. I'm sore and tired. Think I'll have three Advil, a couple of pints of water, put my feet up and relax.
